Savasana (Corpse Pose)

The most important pose, rest, receive, absorb.

Savasana is the final resting pose of almost every yoga practice, and arguably the most important one. After working the body through movement, Savasana gives the nervous system time to integrate everything, allowing the benefits of the practice to fully absorb. It looks like simply lying down, but the practice of true stillness and conscious release is one of the most challenging things yoga asks of us. Don't skip it.

How to Practice Savasana (Corpse Pose)

  1. Lie flat on your back on your mat.

  2. Let your legs fall open naturally, feet flopping to the sides.

  3. Let your arms rest a few inches away from your body, palms facing up.

  4. Close your eyes.

  5. Release any effort, let the mat hold you completely.

  6. Allow your breath to return to its natural rhythm.

  7. Stay for 5-10 minutes (or longer).

  8. To come out: deepen your breath, wiggle your fingers and toes, roll to one side, and slowly press up to seated.

Modifications & Variations

  • Bolster under knees: Place a bolster or rolled blanket under your knees to release lower back tension, this is especially helpful for those with lower back pain.

  • Blanket over body: Cover yourself with a blanket to stay warm, as body temperature drops during relaxation.

  • Eye pillow: An eye pillow blocks light and adds gentle pressure that promotes deep relaxation.

  • Elevated head: If lying flat is uncomfortable for your neck, place a folded blanket under your head.
