Sugar Cane Pose is a playful and challenging variation of Half Moon Pose that adds a quad stretch and backbend by reaching back to hold the lifted foot. It requires excellent balance, hip opening, shoulder flexibility, and a willingness to play at your edge. When it comes together, it feels both athletic and graceful, like a dancer mid-performance.
How to Practice Sugar Cane Pose (Ardha Chandra Chapasana)
Begin in Half Moon Pose balanced on your right foot with your left leg lifted and your right hand on a block or the floor.
Bend your left knee, bringing your left heel toward your left glute.
Reach your left arm back and hold your left foot or ankle.
Keep your right hip stacked over your right ankle.
Gently kick your left foot into your hand to deepen the quad stretch and backbend.
Gaze forward or slightly upward.
Hold for 3-5 breaths, then switch sides.
Modifications & Variations
Use a strap: Loop a strap around your back foot if you can't reach it without collapsing your balance.
Keep the foot low: You don't need to kick the back foot high, even a gentle pull creates the quad stretch.
Block under bottom hand: Always use a block in this pose to give yourself more height and make the balance more stable.
