Yoga for Runners | 60-Minute Recovery Flow for the SF Marathon & Beyond

Have a race coming up? Or maybe your legs are feeling the effects of a long training run?

This 60-minute all-levels yoga flow was created specifically for runners who want to move with a little more ease before or after logging miles. Filmed live at the Whale's Tail in Golden Gate Park as part of our Free Summer Yoga Series, this class was taught the day before the San Francisco Marathon, making it the perfect practice for calming pre-race nerves, restoring tired legs, and reconnecting with your breath.

Rather than pushing for more intensity, we'll focus on mindful movement, gentle mobility, and stretches for the hips, hamstrings, calves, ankles, and lower back. No props are required, and you'll find options throughout the class so you can practice in a way that feels supportive for your body.

Why Yoga Can Support Runners

Running asks a lot from our bodies. Every mile places repetitive demands on the hips, calves, feet, ankles, and lower back. While running itself builds incredible cardiovascular endurance, it doesn't always provide the variety of movement our bodies benefit from. And that's where yoga can complement your training.

A regular yoga practice may help you:

  • Improve hip and ankle mobility

  • Maintain flexibility through the hamstrings and calves

  • Build balance and single-leg stability

  • Reduce feelings of stiffness after long runs

  • Practice breathing and body awareness

  • Create dedicated time for recovery between training sessions

Recovery is all about giving your body the movement and care it needs so you can continue doing what you love.

What You'll Practice in This Class

This flow moves at a steady, accessible pace with an emphasis on releasing common areas of tension for runners while building mobility and body awareness.

You'll practice:

  • Thread the Needle to create space through the shoulders and upper back while easing into the practice.

  • Gate Pose to stretch the side body and open the hips while building gentle stability.

  • Low Lunge with Side Bend to lengthen the hip flexors after long hours of running or sitting.

  • Half Splits with Ankle Circles to bring mobility into the hamstrings, calves, and ankles.

  • Warrior II, Starfish & Reverse Warrior to improve lower-body strength while creating spaciousness through the torso.

  • Skandasana and Malasana to encourage hip mobility and ankle flexibility.

  • Reclining Double Pigeon to gently release the outer hips and glutes.

  • Happy Baby to finish with a relaxing stretch before settling into a long savasana.

By the end of class, you'll hopefully feel a little lighter, more open, and ready for whatever your next run, or recovery day, has in store.

The Inspiration Behind This Flow

This class holds a special place in my heart because it was filmed the day before the San Francisco Marathon (one of my favorite weekends in SF).

A few years ago, I stood at that same starting line to run my first full marathon. And looking back, it's still one of the accomplishments I'm most proud of!

I remember months of early mornings, carefully planning weekend long runs, and trying to figure out how to even run 20 plus miles around San Francisco (I eventually had to cross the Golden Gate Bridge to make it happen!). I remember sore legs, toenails that eventually fell off, and wondering if I'd actually be ready when race day arrived.

Going into the marathon, my goal was simple: complete my training and make it to the finish line without getting injured.

I had a loose time goal, but I wasn't attached to hitting a particular pace. Finishing was what mattered most.

but then... something surprised me.

Later that evening, after crossing the finish line and celebrating with a Mission Super Burrito AND Burger King, I found myself lying in bed thinking:

"I should have gone faster."

Instead of celebrating what I'd accomplished, my mind immediately shifted toward what could have been different.

Yoga philosophy offers us the concept of Santosha, or contentment. Santosha reminds us to appreciate where we are instead of constantly chasing the next achievement.

Crossing the finish line wasn't actually the hardest part.

Giving myself permission to be proud of it was.

Whether you're preparing for your very first 5K, training for your next marathon, or simply heading out for weekend runs because you love being outside, I hope this practice reminds you to celebrate how far you've already come. Your body is carrying you through something incredible, and it deserves a little gratitude along the way. 🫶🏽
