Music festivals are a lot of fun, but they also ask a lot from your body. As a Outside Lands music festival veteran, I know how the hours of standing, the long walks between stages, dancing, carrying a backpack, and navigating on uneven ground can leave your feet, hips, back, and shoulders feeling tired before the day is over.
I created this 60-minute all-levels vinyasa Yoga for Music Festivals flow to help you prepare for those long, active days. Whether you're heading to a festival, traveling, hiking with friends, or simply looking for an energizing full-body practice, we'll build the balance, mobility, strength, and stamina to help you move with more confidence.
This class was filmed live at the Whale's Tail in Golden Gate Park as part of our Free Summer Yoga Series. No props are required, and options are offered throughout so you can adapt the practice to your body and experience level. Together, we'll gradually work toward Fallen Triangle Pose, using twisting postures, hip mobility, and core strength to build a playful and accessible progression.
What to Expect in This Class
We'll begin by creating mobility through the spine and shoulders before gradually building heat with standing flows, twisting sequences, and balance work. The practice is designed to leave you feeling energized without feeling rushed.
Throughout class, you'll practice:
Thread the Needle to create space through the upper back and shoulders before flowing.
Low Lunge with Twists to improve hip mobility while encouraging gentle spinal rotation.
Half Splits to lengthen the backs of the legs and prepare for standing balance.
Horizon Pose and Side Plank to build core strength, shoulder stability, and body awareness.
Twisted Chair, Revolved Crescent Lunge, and Revolved Side Angle to develop rotational strength and coordination.
Wide-Legged Forward Fold, Skandasana, Malasana, and Goddess Pose to improve hip mobility and prepare for playful movement.
Fallen Triangle Pose as the optional peak posture that brings together balance, strength, and mobility.
Bridge Pose, Optional Wheel, Figure Four, Double Pigeon, and Happy Baby to cool down and release the hips after the more active standing work.
By the end of class, you'll have explored a full-body practice that balances effort with ease, helping you feel grounded, open, and ready for whatever adventure comes next.
Why Yoga Is Great Preparation for Music Festivals
A full day at a festival isn't that different from other active adventures. You're constantly walking, balancing, standing, and changing direction while spending hours on your feet.
This practice focuses on movements that can support those demands by helping you:
Improve balance for uneven terrain like parks and outdoor venues
Build leg and core strength for long days of walking and standing
Increase hip mobility for greater freedom of movement
Develop shoulder stability while carrying backpacks or bags
Encourage healthy spinal rotation through twisting sequences
Stay connected to your breath as your body works
Rather than focusing on one specific body part, this flow prepares your entire body to move well. If you're new to yoga, you'll find plenty of modifications along the way. If you've been practicing for a while, you'll have opportunities to explore deeper variations while maintaining steady, mindful movement.
The Inspiration Behind This Flow
Every summer, Golden Gate Park fills with people gathering outside whether they're enjoying live music, picnicking with friends, attending festivals, or simply soaking up a sunny afternoon.
I wanted this class to capture that same sense of playfulness and freedom. Instead of treating yoga as something separate from everyday life, this practice celebrates movement that supports the activities we already love.
Fallen Triangle became the perfect peak pose because it combines strength, balance, mobility, and curiosity. Like dancing or exploring a new place, it asks us to stay present, adapt, and enjoy the process rather than worrying about achieving the "perfect" pose.
My hope is that you finish this class feeling more connected to your body, more confident in your movement, and ready for your next adventure, whether that's a music festival, a weekend trip, or simply enjoying the outdoors.
